I want to begin this post by stating the obvious. There are a LOT of protein powders out there. So how do you go about choosing one? Do protein powders all do the same thing? When should I use protein? Why would I use it? These are all great questions that I am here to answer.

Now, as you probably have already noticed by the title, I am specifically posting this blog to talk about Level 1 protein, why I use and recommend it, who I would recommend it to, what it even is and where you can try it yourself.

What is Level 1 Protein?

Level 1 is a protein powder made by the supplement company 1st Phorm. Here is part of the description as seen on their website: ’Level-1 is comprised of the Level-1 Matrix which is an ultra bio-available, sustained assimilation protein formula consisting of Cross-Flow Micro-Filtrated Whey Protein Isolate, Low Temperature Micro-Filtrated Whey Protein Concentrate, Low Temperature Processed Milk Protein Concentrate, Pure Egg Whites and Sodium Caseinate’.  In simple terms, this just means that Level 1 protein is a blend of few different high quality proteins that are formulated together properly to digest slowly in the body. It’s only combined of proteins that have been processed at a low temperature to ensure high bioavailability aka to make sure your body can use as much as possible.

Do I take Level 1 Protein post workout?

This is NOT a protein powder you would want to take post workout. Post workout your body needs a rapid assimilating protein and carb. Lucky for you I have a post about this as well right here.  Level 1 protein is meant to serve as a meal replacement protein and mimic the digestion of a whole food (i.e chicken breast). As I mentioned before, it’s a protein blend (whey protein isolate, whey protein concentrate, milk protein concentrate, egg whites and sodium caseinate) designed to slowly release essential amino acids into your body and keep you full over 3-4 hours.

Why do you use Level 1 Protein?

Something I personally appreciate about all of 1st Phorm’s supplements is that they are 1. efficaciously dosed (properly dosed) 2. manufactured at ideal temperatures rather than doing what’s cheaper/will cost them less money and 3. made in and FDA inspected facility. NO supplements are regulated by the FDA, which is pretty scary. This means companies can essentially put whatever they want on a label, even if it doesn’t line up with what’s in the product. Is you protein powder really pure protein? Or is it partially comprised of fillers to cut costs? Something to think about. 1st Phorm chooses to manufacture all of their supplements in an FDA inspected facility so you can be confident that what you see on the label is actually what you are putting inside of your body.

Do you recommend Level 1 Protein?

Aside from the post workout setting, I ALWAYS recommend whole foods over supplements. However, I also understand it’s not realistic for some people to consume 5-6 whole food meals in day. Level 1 protein powder is meant to be a convenient and delicious alternative to a whole food meal when you are in a pinch or in my case, when the sweet tooth hits.

When do you use Level 1 Protein?

-Any setting where eating a whole food meal isn’t appropriate but drinking something could be. (stuck in a meeting, driving etc).

-Any time you need to get a meal in but didn’t prepare any food/ don’t have time to. All you need is a scoop of Level 1 and some water or milk (I prefer using unsweetened almond milk).

-When that sweet tooth hits! Here is another blog post I wrote on Level 1 protein that shares some of my favorite recipes with it including protein soft serve, protein waffles and a breakdown of the flavors.

Leading from this, I specifically enjoy Level 1 before bed when my sweet cravings hit AND when my body will be not have the chance to be nourished for a while. This way I can insure a steady release of fuel to keep my metabolism active while I rest and prevent muscle break down.

As always, if you have any questions about Level 1 or anything fitness/nutrition related, send me an email at amykfit@gmail.com.
